Salman Khan hit-and-run case to be heard April 8

A sessions court here Monday deferred to April 8 the hearing of the 2002 hit-and-run case against Bollywood actor Salman Khan.

A magistrate court, trying the case, had invoked the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Section 304 part II of the Indian Penal Code) and shifted the trial to the sessions court last month. The charge, if proved, can attract a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail.

The actor had filed a review petition to quash the charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which will be heard April 8 by Sessions Judge U.B. Hejib.

Earlier, Salman Khan was tried by a magistrate under lesser charge of causing death by negligence (Section 304 A IPC) that provides for a maximum punishment of two years in prison.

Salman Khan had rammed his car into a bakery in suburban Bandra on September 28, 2002, killing one person and injuring four others who were sleeping on the pavement.

We've said it numerous times now; we could have carried on and been third in the world comfortably but we don't accept that, we want be No. 1 in the world. We've put some stuff in place that we believe can get this team there in the next 24 months."

Arthur also denied about the speculated rift between skipper Clarke and vice-captain Shane Watson.

"Team harmony is fantastic. The players work extremely hard. We've got a really good group of young players who want nothing more than to make Australia the best cricket team in the world. It's a funny perception around Michael and Shane, they're different personalities, different characters but they get on really well. It's sometimes a media beat-up around Watto and Pup, they work really well together and always have. I haven't seen anything to dispel that," said the South African.

Arthur admitted he had concerns entering the tour of India due to the tough conditions.

The vaccine candidate — known as RTS,S — is not yet on the market, but ongoing trials in seven African countries generated hope that it might help slow new malaria cases as drug resistance to the deadly parasite grows.

The latest data comes from a phase II follow-up study on 320 children in Kenya which found that in the first year after vaccination, protection against malaria was 43.6 percent, but that dropped to zero by the fourth year.

It also found that the more often a child was exposed to malaria, the less effective the vaccine appeared to be. The vaccine’s efficacy was 45.1 percent in children with below-average exposure to malaria, but just 15.9 percent in children with above-average exposure, said the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

“Despite the falling efficacy over time, there is still a clear benefit to the vaccine candidate,” said senior author Phillip Bejon.

“We now need to look at whether offering a vaccine booster can sustain efficacy for longer,” added Bejon, a fellow at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme and the Centre for Tropical Medicine, University of Oxford.

Early results from larger, ongoing phase III trials have shown the vaccine cut malaria cases in half during the first year of follow-up in young children, and by about a third in babies.

Mary Anne Rhyne, a US spokeswoman from GlaxoSmithKline, the pharmaceutical company that makes the vaccine, said the Kenya study is “small” and uses data from just one of many trial sites, while larger studies are still under way.

“The Phase III pivotal study, involving 15,460 children, is ongoing and should provide meaningful insights into the vaccine candidate’s efficacy in different malaria parasite transmission settings, longer-term efficacy (2.5 years after primary vaccination) and the impact of a booster dose,” she told AFP in an email.

“These analyses are expected to be publicly available by the end of 2014.”

In the meantime, she said, the vaccine is “still under development and subject to the evaluation of its benefits and risks by the regulatory authorities before being made available.”

In November 2012, results from phase III tests on 6,500 infants showed that the RTS,S vaccine only protected about a third of very young babies, compared to success rates of between 47 percent and 55 percent in children between the ages of five and 17 months.

At the time, GSK’s chief executive officer Andrew Witty described those results as “a little frustrating.”

The RTS,S vaccine candidate trial is the largest of its kind, and is being conducted at 11 sites across seven African countries. There are several other projects under way with vaccine candidates in clinical trials worldwide.

Separately on Wednesday, a group of international researchers announced progress in studies on mice that could lead to a new malaria vaccine candidate for humans, one that appears not to create drug resistance in the parasites.

“This is one of the first drugs ever to kill the malaria parasite in all three stages of its life cycle,” said Dennis Kyle of the University of San Francisco College of Public Health’s Global Infectious Diseases Research team.

The drug, called ELQ-300, is being prepared for clinical trials, according to the research published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

"I pray to god that he gets remedy and spends at least the rest of his life peacefully," Rajinikanth said even as many including Press Council of India Chairman, Justice Markandeya Katju sought pardon for Dutt with the Hindi film industry rallying behind the actor.

Katju had yesterday appealed to Maharashtra Governor K Sankarnarayanan to pardon the actor.
Dutt had met the veteran Tamil star recently while shooting for his film, 'Policegiri.'
The apex court upheld Dutt's conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case for illegal arms possession but reduced to five years the six year jail term awarded to him by a designated TADA court in 2006.

General Administration of Quality Supervision said in the statement posted in its website that recall is expected to include China-made as well as imported vehicles including Golf Variant, Cross Gold, Audi A3, Bora, Sagitar, Magotan, Touran, Octavia and Passat.

The controller said in a statement that the company and its joint venture partners “will replace the existing gearboxes with improved ones and upgrade the controlling software to the latest version for Volkswagen car owners to eliminate safety concerns. All such services are free.”

Volkswagen and its Chinese joint ventures have only indicated that a voluntary call recall will be announced for cars that are affected with substandard direct-shift gearbox systems. The company has not confirmed the recall and has not specified the number of vehicles that are to be recalled in the Chinese market.

Mumbai, March 20 : Vidyut Jamwal, who will soon be seen in action film "Commando", says he would love to host a show like "Fear Factor: Khaton Ke Khiladi" if presented with an opportunity.

At the launch of an action-based channel, BIG RTL Thrill, Vidyut was asked if he would like to host "Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi", an action-adventure based reality show.

Vidyut replied: "Wherever there is action, I will go. I am a commando, and so he (I) will go wherever he (I) is (am) called."

Actor Akshay Kumar has already hosted three seasons of the show, while actress Priyanka Chopra has hosted one.

BIG RTL Thrill also launched its own show "Fear Factor... Khatron Se Takkar", which will be hosted by TV actor Arhaan Behl of "Pratigya" fame. The channel will telecast dubbed versions of international action shows.

Meanwhile, Vidyut feels women love action more than men.

"In India, we say action is only for men, but I feel women like action more," he said.

Salman Khan vs Ranbir Kapoor at the Box Office

New Delhi: After missing out on his perennial Eid release this year, Dabangg Salman Khan is now eyeing another important weekend in October.

Salman plans to release his Mental, directed by younger brother Sohail Khan, on the ocassion of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2.

Here's a catch, Salman's Mental will then clash with his Dabangg director Abhinav Kashyap's Besharam featuring Ranbir Kapoor, which also releases on the same day.

Salman and his brother Arbaaz had a fall-out with Abhinav after he refused to direct Dabangg 2. Salman is also upset with Ranbir Kapoor, who is reportedly dating Tiger's ex-flame Katrina.

This is not the first time that there will be a Ranbir-Salman clash at the box office. In the past as well, Salman's God Tussi Great Ho had released with Ranbir's Bachna Ae Haseeno on August 15, 2008.

I am not satisfied doing one kind of films: Prachi Desai

PTI: Actress Prachi Desai does not mind being part of masala entertainers as leading ladies just have to do a bit of song and dance while heroes do all the work.

"It is quite a relief to do such films. It is all hassle-free. You just go there, relax, sit, enjoy, say a few lines, do dance numbers and look good. It is a fabulous thing to do," Prachi told PTI.

"I am an actor so I am not satisfied doing only one kind of films, so I try to balance it out whether the film or the role is big or small I am okay with it. If the role would not be important, I will not do it," she said.

Top heroines including Sonakshi, Kareena and Asin have been doing such entertainers like 'Dabangg', 'Rowdy Rathore', 'Son of Sardaar', 'Bodyguard', 'Ready' and 'Khiladi 786', all of which turned to be huge hits.

The 24-year-old had a successful stint on television with her debut soap 'Kasamh Se' being a big hit. Later, a dance reality show catapulted her to stardom which landed her a few offers in Bollywood. In 'Rock On', she essayed the role of Farhan Akhtar's wife. In Milan Luthria's 'Once Upon A Time In Mumbai', she played muse to Emraan Hashmi.

In 'Bol Bachchan', Prachi played a college girl, and was a sister of Ajay Devgn. Her latest movie 'I me Aur Main' saw her playing the role of a young girl next-door.

"As an actor you feel constant pressure as you are watched continuously... you have to be presentable and good in every area," Prachi said. .

Wish I could have done something better: Amrita Rao

PTI :Actress Amrita Rao, best known for her portrayals in Ishq Vishk, Main Hoon Na and Vivah, says filmy career is a very precarious one as one cannot plan out things.Amrita made her acting debut in 2002 with Ab Ke Baras alongside Arya Babbar.

But it was her third film Ishq Vishk opposite Shahid Kapoor which brought her fame. She followed this up with Masti and Main Hoon Na with Vivek Oberoi, and Shah Rukh Khan. Later followed a series of unsuccessful films like Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi, Shikhar, Pyare Mohan until Sooraj Barjatya's Vivah, again opposite Shahid happened. Then again there was a lull with films like My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves, Shortkut, Love U Mr. Kalakaar. Now she would be seen next in Jolly LLB alongside Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani, Prakash Jha's Satyagraha and Singh Saheb The Great with Sunny Deol. "I think this (acting) is a very precarious career as I feel you can't plan things for yourself. When you plan it, things go haywire.
It is unintentional that I will do less films it just happened that way. Like in 2000, I had a line of films signed but it all went for a toss. The films never got made... It just happens," Amrita said. "Life surprises you. It happens to the best of actors, we have good and bad phases. In the last two years I have had a record of one film a year. It is unplanned. Also I did not plan that I would have three films in 2013," she added.

It was in 2002 when Amrita entered filmdom and now as she has completed ten years in the industry.

"I feel satisfied with my journey in the film industry. If Satyagrah was supposed to be my last film I would look back and say it was a happy portfolio. But there is a feeling that I wish I could have done something better," she said.

The 31-year-old insists she has been receiving offers for films but nothing interesting came her way to accept it. "It is not that right kinds of offers are not coming. Sometimes you don't want to take them for different reasons. But the good part is offers have been coming. I did not have to knock doors or chase people for work. Disappointments do happen when plans don't go according to you," she said.

Supernatural Scarier Than Getting Typecast: Bipasha

(TopNews) Kolkata: Popular Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu, who will be seen in horror movie "Aatma", Monday said she's more afraid of the supernatural than getting into an image trap.

"Stereotypes don't scare me much, but yes, supernatural would scare the hell out of me," said Bipasha, who is in the city to promote "Aatma".

Stating that she has been "adventurous" about choosing roles, Bipasha said her bold avatar in 2003 movie "Jism" was a trendsetter.

"There was a point of time in 2003, when none of the leading ladies would ever want to do an adult film. That's when I did 'Jism', and then there was a trend of bold, negative roles for women... So I have never been afraid of any kind of typecasting," she said.

The 33-year-old actress, who has starred in a few horror movies, wants to more such films.

"In 13 years of my career, I have acted in four horror movies and I wish to do more", she said.

With Bipasha, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Doyel Dhawan in the lead, the Suparn Verma directed "Aatma" is set for a March 22 release.

Marriage not crime for an actress: Kareena Kapoor

(TopNews) Mumbai: Kareena Kapoor, who wed Saif Ali Khan last year, says being married is not a crime for an actress. She believes personal and professional aspects of life must not be mixed.

"If a girl loves someone or gets married, it doesn't mean that people will not love her or her character on-screen. These (films and marriage) are two different aspects and we should not try and club them. Anyways, falling in love or getting married is not a crime," the 32-year-old said here Tuesday on the opening day of FICCI FRAMES 2013.

Kareena was here to light the ceremonial lamp for the three-day event.

She even cited examples of yesteryears' actresses, who went on to do films even after marriage.

"I think people are talking about it more (now). Earlier also, be it Waheedaji (Rehman) or Sharmilaji (Tagore), they were all married and they all acted in films like 'Daag', 'Amar Prem' and 'Guide'. It has been happening (ever since)," Kareena said.Kareena married Saif Oct 16, 2012.
